Please note that the arrival time at Arendsnes must not be later than 18:00. Please also take note that no meals and accommodation will be provided after 20:00.

Pre-Conference Excursion

The excursion is a self-travel, self-accommodate, self-cater (ad)venture, in the Tsitsa River Catchment. There are no pre-excursion fees, but you need to make your own travel, accommodation and food arrangements. 

 

Dates

Arriving in Maclear on 12 September in the afternoon and departure to Chintsa East on 15 September in the morning. However, you may join the excursion at any stage, e.g. delegates flying in to Mthatha and hiring a vehicle.

 

Accommodation

Three nights (12-14 September). The recommended option is at Bob's Place Guest Farm (15 km’s outside Maclear). Choices of accommodation at Bob’s Place range from single room, twin room, and camping (all self-catering). Contact Colleen Viedge on colleenviedge@gmail.com. Additional accommodation is also available in the town of Maclear, for example Alpine B&B; Declan’s B&B, Maclear Manor, Woodcliff. Links to booking sites are provided on https://saageomorph.wixsite.com/saag/accommodation.

 

Logistics

  • Talks by academics and students begin at a lookout point of the Tsitsa River on the R396 from 09h30 on 13 September and we will travel in convoy to other sites thereafter.

  • Entrance fees to the Mhlontlo Nature Reserve are for your own expense (R20pp).

  • A WhatsApp group for communication purposes will be created later for the excursion.

  • Avoid driving at night due to road conditions (potholes, stray animals, poor visibility due to mist etc.). Expect delays due to roadworks and twisty/sloping roads.

Conference Workshop

Logistics

The workshop is planned around four main activities.

  1. A selection of presentations on erosion and rehabilitation in southern Africa.

  2. A debate around current best management practices (BMP), with regards to erosion and rehabilitation.

  3. A discussion on the issues around dispersive soils and their management and rehabilitation.

  4. Finally, the workshop will be used to set the date for a hands-on three-day workshop that is planned for April 2020, where participants will discuss and demonstrate soil erosion rehabilitation methods. This workshop will also be of interest to participants from agricultural and environmental studies.

SECOND CIRCULAR : CONFERENCE DETAILS

On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are pleased to provide more information on the 2019 Biennial Conference of the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists. This year we also celebrate 30 years since our first conference! The 2019 conference will be held in Chintsa East, with the preconference excursion based in the Maclear area (Tsitsa River Catchment), Eastern Cape, and a post conference workshop focusing on soil erosion. The participation of early career scholars and postgraduate research researchers is positively encouraged.

Pre-conference Excursion

  • The excursion is at participant's own cost in terms of travel, food, and accommodation, i.e. it is a self-drive excursion. 

  • Access to the sites is free.

  • Presentations and guides are also free.

  • SAAG/SADC members: R 420

  • Non-member: R 450

 

Presentations

Both oral and poster presentations in the field of geomorphology are invited. A PowerPoint projection facility will be available. Oral presentations will be 15 min + 5 for questions. To avoid parallel oral sessions, delegates may be requested to present posters, particularly where thematic sessions are well represented. Co-workers on projects with multiple papers are requested to arrange in advance with the organisers for thematic sessions comprising of joint poster/oral presentations.

 

Additional Information

Registration fees include teas, lunches, a snack dinner on the Sunday evening, dinners on Monday and Tuesday. Accommodation and breakfasts are for the delegates’ own arrangement. The conference venue Arendsnes has accommodation facilities and delegates should contact Arendnes directly for reservations.

 

In order to minimise costs, the book of abstracts will be available electronically and no SAAG-branded conference bag or stationary will be provided. WiFi is also not available.

 

A prize will be made to the delegate with the oldest item of SAAG memorabilia (e.g. T-shirt, conference bag) that can be shown at the conference.

FIRST CIRCULAR : SAAG 2019 CONFERENCE

On behalf of the Organising Committee, we are pleased to invite you to the Biennial Conference of the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists. This year the conference will be held from 12-18 September 2019 in Chintsa East, a coastal village north of East London.  A preconference excursion will be based in the Maclear area (Tsitsa River Catchment), Eastern Cape, and a post conference workshop will also form part of the meeting. The participation of early career scholars and postgraduate research researchers is positively encouraged.
