The 1998 Biennial Conference was hosted by Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa from 28 June-01 July 1998. This was also the first time that conference proceedings were published. These are available here.

The conference was organised by the 1998 SAAG conference organizing committee consisting of Kate Rowntree (Convener, Rhodes University), Evan Dollar (SAAG Secretary & Treasurer, Rhodes University), Paul Sumner and Ian Meiklejohn (both from the University of Pretoria), as well as M Oliver (from the then University of Transkei, now Walter Sisulu University).
