
KEYNOTE ADDRESS

Professor Frank Eckardt from the University of Cape Town will be giving the keynote address at our 2025 conference on 16 July. He will be talking on “Geomorphology Sans Frontiers”, a talk aimed at emerging geomorphologists.

Bio
Professor Frank Eckardt studied geography at King’s College London (1992), remote sensing at Cranfield University (1993), and completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford (1997). He began his academic career at the University of Botswana (1998) and joined the University of Cape Town in 2005, where he later served as Head of Department (2021–2024). He is recognised for his work in dryland geomorphology and studies, among other aspects, the landscapes and environmental dynamics of drylands across Southern Africa. His work often combines satellite remote sensing with field investigations, with a particular interest in dust emissions and land degradation. Frank has consulted, collaborated and published extensively and recently edited a Springer Volume on Landscapes and Landforms of Botswana. He has also served as President of the Southern African Association of Geomorphologists (2010-2012) and the International Society of Aeolian Research (2018-2023).
